I like this sign because it is inspired by the fine County-made barrels that their wines age in. The iron and wood will age just like a wine barrel. I love the idea that this sign will just get better with age…

There are times in our lives where having a voice is important. When we sit silent we can’t be responsible for changes we don’t like. In the past, the common man’s voice had be limited to their circle of friends but with social media this voice has changed to conversation and thus a louder voice. That’s what is happening in Prince Edward County, and people’s outrage over the demolishing of a historic downtown monument – a solid brick church – circa 1875.

I recently came across the “BP Logo Design” website , a competition to redesign their logo allowing designers a chance to express their thoughts and make a social statement through their voice – design. I’ve been very interested in the expressions of local artists and designers in their interpretation of the demolition of the church. The above T-shirt is mine… I know I swore, but I’m a little pissed off.

I’m going to share a couple of other interpretations below:

This is the work of photographer Steven Draper of Pole Pics. This was taken on Friday afternoon and the result of Steven wanting to capture the building and some of its supporters before it was gone. Steven’s unique perspective allows for a view that will never been seen again.

This is the first of two pieces by Carl Wiens. Carl also attended the shoot above with his children and is an amazing illustrator responsible for a lot of the branded illustrations of Picton, including, capturing its’ architecture. You’ll see his work in the celebratory banners around town actually showcasing the irony here.

The second piece coming from Carl is coincidentally a reality. Without notice or the proper paper work the demolition came in Sunday and tore down half the building leaving it exposed, and a very real danger to the community.

Local illustrator/designer Tim Snyder expressed himself in the artwork above begging the real conversation about progress. His retro play on the image about what could happen became a reality.

The final piece in the series is by artist Milé Murtanovski. Picton is a community that attracts visitors because of our authenticity of place and respect for our history, the doctored photo shows a reality that is coming. In some ways it’s like a scene from a horror movie. When this progress happens, what will differentiate us from any other small town that has lost its past?

The funny thing about this post about a church that needs saving is that it has nothing to do with religion. You can view the story below.

The mural is the creation of the incredibly talented Brandy Gale. Brandy’s art to me is a celebration of colour and emotion and while I’m no art critique in any way it makes me extremely happy. This wall makes me happy!

Chesterfields owner Graham Sayers is doing some really fun things in our community and this wall is just a glimpse in the mind of the creator of the “BELCH”. Every morning you can head into the Picton café and grab the best breakfast in town, while he spins tunes from his ever growing record collection. Classic Dolly Parton with my toast is always a good time.

Graham is also making headlines with his “Super Cider Me” where he is attempting to drink The County Cider Company Waupoos Cider every day for the next year. He will not drink beer, wine, or liquor or any kind for one year and document the experience. Scout is a sponsor – lol. He’ll be on 96.3 fm with Ange Stever on Wednesday August 4th talking about the journey.

Oh and the above photo is taken by a buddy of mine, Derek Richardson.

I recently received an “Overshare” badge on FourSquare – I had visited 10 locations in one day securing my mayorship at 2 new locations. Visiting 10 locations in a day isn’t necessarily unusual for me but it was unusual to post each one. The truth is that I knew that my friend Katie had the badge and I wondered how many spots I had to go to get that illusive icon – the answer was 10. I knew I was oversharing when my friend Bryan commented on the stop at Teasels Drugs Store. All were legitimate stops, but did the world have to know? It can actually be answered 2 ways:

1) Let’s suppose the answer is “no.” No, the world doesn’t need to know my every movement (Craig and Vivy might when they post the “Have you spotted Rene?” statuses on Facebook) but the general population doesn’t need to know or care for that matter where I happen to be. I loved getting the badge but it did reinforce a lesson – watch what you say. As easy as it is to post a status, it is seen by the dozens/hundreds/thousands of people who are friends or followers. Drunken statuses are never a good thing or, for that matter, statuses posted in the heat of anger. Creep Facebook at 11pm on any Saturday night to witness this.

2) Let’s flip the coin and say the answer is “yes” — the world needs to know. It wouldn’t be true but it’s all a matter of perspective. I tend to look at social media as a game and that’s why I like FourSquare so much, collecting points and finding to-do’s by frequenting businesses is a lot of fun. Plus, sharing is part of the dialogue of social media and it is a primary means of conversation of a lot of people these days. If we’re not sharing the conversation is dead and this sharing is what puts the social in social media. Sure you can be online and not sharing but where is the fun in that.

In the end, though, I try not to overshare as a rule, limiting my statuses to one or two a day tops. I’ll participate in likes and comments but choose my own statuses to share the fun/crazy stuff or perspectives in my life. My tweets are a bit more whimsical in my mood but, again, I’m careful not to do it too often — it pisses people off. I do FourSquare all the time though, that’s the point of the application.

The little social media campaign that could received the go ahead to continue the fight of smelling like ash and create 2 new videos and a short “making of” video amongst other promotional material. The success of the campaign is the result of a pretty cool County collaboration and we’re getting the team together to shoot the new spots. Auditions will be held July 7th for the new videos and we’ll be getting the hopeful teen stars to replicate one of the previous videos in hopes of being in the new ones. So if you or you know someone that wants help fight the ash stench, be in a clip and has a pretty good gag reflex have them email rene@scoutdesign.ca or visit the facebook page.

I love stories of people taking responsibility for their dreams and Exit Through The Gift Shop is a perfect example of that. The Banksy film is described as “the world’s first street art disaster movie” and judging by the trailer the coolest thing ever.

In order to secure the film coming here Andrew set up a Facebook fan page to get enough people to commit to buying a ticket and financing the film. He had a dream, shared his passion and made it happen. Exit Through The Gift Shop is coming to the Regent Theatre July 8 and tickets are on sale at the box office for 5$.

The photo above was from a photo shoot we did there for some upcoming advertisements. The fine-dining establishment was an absolute pleasure to work with, the shoot was fun and tasty with each of the models receiving delightful meals and topped full glass of local wine all evening. I think the positive energy of the place really comes through in the photo.

I admire Angélines for many reasons… the great food and the ambiance are a given but what I really admire their commitment to the community. They are involved with the County Community Foundation with the Willy Fida Culinary Fund which provides a bursary of $1500 to a student from PEC to study the culinary arts. An amazing tribute to Willy and to giving back.

Angélines has also stepped forward as a sponsor of the launch of Square2 Magazine on Thursday June 10 by providing the Regent Theatre as a host to the birth of the publication. Their commitment to the arts is incredible – thank you!

We’ve kept most of the photos from that amazing night under wraps until the magazine’s launch this week.

The idea came when discussing ideas to promote the amazing theatre during a tour with the manager, Sharon. For one evening, a select group of volunteers played dress-up throughout the theatre using some of the amazing historic costumes from their treasury of vintage pieces in the attic. During the course of the day we shot 14 models in dozens of costumes in just about every location, from the stage, the green room (dressing rooms), projection room to even the ticket booth. The period costumes covered everything from Elizabethan royalty to a reproduction of a burlesque show.

Finally the magic of these shots will be revealed Thursday evening when the magazine lands in the hands of Prince Edward County! As a special treat at the launch Hri Neil will be making video art of the photography for the big screen! Thank you to Trevor, Kelly, Theresa, Rachel, Damien, Ashley, Craig, Jean-Anne, Brandy, Kyle, Chrissy, Susanne and Eric for their sense of play and of course thank you the the Regent Theatre for allowing us all the experience.
