How do you brand the County?

I feel like I have a special relationship with my County, it goes beyond any family history here or beyond its overwhelming beauty. It’s an intangible mix of rural living with some of the best experiences the country has to offer in the ways of arts, culture and especially culinary adventures. From our wineries, our amazing restaurants, cafés and to our roadside stands every turn down our back roads can bring a new epicurean adventure. The list goes on… reading back on past posts on this blog you’ll see everything from cracker companies, food festivals, goats milk cheese factories and gourmet mini hot dog makers. It doesn’t take long living here to appreciate where the food on my plate comes from and choosing to live as a 100 mile dieter and eating slow.
This past month Scout was invited work with Taste the County on its destination marketing campaign for 2009, this is the second campaign we’ve been involved in. This time our mission out is to promote agricultural tourism and as described above that can be pretty easy considering where we live. The trick is to accurately reflect our rural culture with all of its charms and show the County in it’s true light. We’re not Burgundy, even as people debate our similar wine growing limestone rich soils, we’re not Tuscany, our artisanal food culture is ours alone and as much as our golden sand beaches stretch on for kilometers, we’re not Australia. These comparisons are the catalyst of the campaign, taking it further, who needs these places anyway? As the target markets are all within a couple of hours drive, we can deliver an awesome experience – with no passport required.

I really have to say the campaign concept creation was very rewarding, working closely with Taste I have to give them much credit in its conception. Collaboration in this way is a preferred working method of ours. Utilizing the strengths of an organization and past knowledge can only improve upon ideas and make them stronger. Thank you Kathy, Jenn and Grace – you guys rock. The feedback I’ve been receiving from the campaign has been pretty incredible.
Oh and a good thing about this campaign is the contest, go online at www.comebacktoearth.ca and you can enter to win the vacation of your choosing.

What I think is that we have to stop trying to “brand” the county. IT isn’t a product or a commodity – we live here and work here, and anyone is free to join us. “Branding” isn’t what’s going to make things happen here. The emotional draw you are looking for is write in your blog entry – it’s your experience and your feelings – those evoked by the landscape etc. and by comparison with other places. It’s what happens here – everyday.
Scout – it happens here everyday
Pinch – happens here everyday
Festival Players- happens here everyday
The people who make these things happen here everyday, they are here with family and friends everyday.
That’s what needs to be captured and communicated – in my opinion anyway.
